Student Assessment in Bali

Professional student assessment in Bali to identify learning needs, strengths, and gaps. Curriculum-aligned, detailed reports, and actionable recommendations.

What Is a Student Assessment?

A student assessment is a structured evaluation of your child's academic abilities, learning style, and educational needs. It is not a test that your child passes or fails. It is a diagnostic tool that helps us understand where your child is, what they are good at, where they struggle, and what kind of support they need. We use assessment results to design personalised tutoring programmes that target the specific areas where your child needs help.

Who Should Have an Assessment?

Assessments are useful for many students:

  • New students who are starting tutoring and want to establish a baseline. We need to know where to begin.
  • Students who are struggling at school and parents are unsure why. The assessment identifies whether the issue is a knowledge gap, a skill gap, a learning difference, or a confidence problem.
  • Students with learning differences (ADHD, dyslexia, autism) who need an individualised understanding of their strengths and challenges. The assessment helps us design appropriate support.
  • Students changing curricula (e.g., moving from Australian to IB, or from local to international school) who need to know what they have missed and what they need to catch up on.
  • Students preparing for exams who want to identify their weak areas and focus their revision effectively.
  • Parents who want a clear picture of their child's academic level and progress. The assessment provides objective, detailed information.

What the Assessment Covers

Our standard assessment covers:

Academic skills:

  • Reading level (phonics, fluency, comprehension)
  • Writing level (spelling, grammar, structure, creativity)
  • Maths level (number, calculation, problem-solving, reasoning)
  • Subject-specific knowledge (if requested: science, history, etc.)

Learning profile:

  • Learning style (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, reading/writing)
  • Strengths and weaknesses
  • Attention and concentration
  • Memory and processing speed
  • Motivation and attitude towards learning

Curriculum alignment:

  • Current curriculum level vs. expected level for age
  • Gaps in curriculum coverage
  • Skills needed for the next level or next curriculum

Specialist areas (if requested):

  • Dyslexia screening (not a formal diagnosis, but an indicator of risk)
  • ADHD assessment indicators (not a medical diagnosis)
  • English language proficiency (for EAL students)

How the Assessment Works

Step 1: Parent consultation (15-30 minutes): We meet with you (in person, by phone, or by video call) to discuss your child's background, school history, current concerns, and goals. We gather information about their school reports, previous assessments, and any relevant medical or educational history.

Step 2: Student assessment (60-90 minutes): We meet with your child in a comfortable, low-pressure setting. The assessment is conducted as a series of friendly activities, conversations, and tasks. It does not feel like a test. We build rapport first and assess second. For young children, we use games and play-based activities. For older students, we use a mix of formal and informal tasks.

Step 3: Report writing (3-5 days): We write a detailed assessment report that includes:

  • Summary of findings
  • Academic level in each area
  • Learning profile and style
  • Strengths and areas for development
  • Specific recommendations for tutoring
  • Curriculum alignment and gap analysis
  • Suggested tutoring plan (frequency, duration, focus areas)

Step 4: Report delivery and discussion (30-45 minutes): We meet with you to discuss the report, answer questions, and agree on a tutoring plan. We explain everything in plain language. We do not use jargon. We make sure you understand the findings and the recommendations.

What the Assessment Is Not

Not a formal diagnosis: Our assessment is an educational evaluation, not a medical or psychological diagnosis. If we suspect dyslexia, ADHD, or another learning difference, we will recommend a formal assessment by a qualified professional. We can recommend psychologists, speech therapists, and other specialists in Bali.

Not a school entrance exam: The assessment is not designed to get your child into a specific school. It is designed to inform tutoring. If you need a school entrance assessment, we can recommend appropriate services.

Not a one-time event: We recommend reassessment every 6-12 months to track progress and adjust the tutoring plan. Many parents find reassessment valuable because it shows concrete improvement and identifies new areas to work on.

FAQ

Will my child feel stressed during the assessment?

No. We design the assessment to be relaxed and enjoyable. We build rapport first, use games and activities for younger children, and explain everything clearly to older students. Most children enjoy the assessment and ask when they can do it again.

How long does the assessment take?

The student assessment takes 60-90 minutes depending on age and needs. The parent consultation takes 15-30 minutes. The report discussion takes 30-45 minutes. The total time is usually 2-3 hours spread over two meetings.

Can I use the report for school?

Yes. The report is a professional document that you can share with your child's school. It provides objective information that teachers can use to support your child. However, it is not a formal diagnosis and should not replace medical or psychological assessments.

How often should my child be reassessed?

We recommend reassessment every 6-12 months to track progress and adjust the tutoring plan. Some students benefit from more frequent reassessment if they are making rapid progress or if their needs are changing.

Can you assess my child for dyslexia?

We can conduct a dyslexia screening that indicates whether your child shows signs of dyslexia. This is not a formal diagnosis. For a formal diagnosis, we recommend an assessment by an educational psychologist. We can recommend professionals in Bali.

Why Student Assessment Matters for Bali Families

Bali's international school community is diverse, fast-moving, and academically demanding. Families arrive from Australia, the UK, Singapore, Europe, and beyond, often moving between curricula mid-year. A student assessment gives newly arrived families an objective picture of where a child sits against the expectations of their new school. It is especially valuable for students entering popular Bali international schools such as Green School, Bali Island School, Canggu Community School, or Sunrise School, where curriculum pacing can differ significantly from a child's previous setting. Local Indonesian families who have chosen international or bilingual pathways also use assessments to identify early gaps before they widen.

Because our tutors work across the Cambridge IGCSE, IB, Australian, and Singaporean curricula, we can interpret results in context and recommend a plan that fits both the school and the student. The assessment also supports students who access maths tutoring, English tutoring, or exam preparation by pinpointing exactly which standards need attention. Whether your child is homeschooled, transitioning schools, or simply behind in one subject, the assessment turns uncertainty into a clear, actionable roadmap.
