Reading Tutor in Bali

Private reading tutors in Bali for phonics, comprehension, fluency, and dyslexia support. Primary, secondary, and adult learners. In-villa or online.

Who This Service Is For

We tutor students who are struggling with reading, learning to read, or want to improve their reading comprehension and fluency. The students we work with usually fall into one of these groups:

  • Early readers (ages 4-7) who are learning phonics, letter sounds, and blending. Often children in Reception, Year 1, or the equivalent.
  • Primary students who can read but struggle with comprehension, fluency, or vocabulary.
  • Secondary students who read below grade level and need to catch up to access the curriculum.
  • Students with dyslexia who need structured, multi-sensory reading instruction using evidence-based approaches.
  • English language learners who can speak English but need to develop reading skills in English.
  • Adults who want to improve their reading for professional or personal reasons.

Common Reading Tutoring Needs in Bali

  1. Phonics and decoding — learning letter-sound relationships, blending sounds into words, and using phonics to read unfamiliar words. The foundation of reading.
  2. Reading comprehension — understanding what is read, not just decoding words. We teach strategies: predicting, questioning, visualising, summarising, inferring.
  3. Reading fluency — reading smoothly, accurately, and with expression. Fluency is the bridge between decoding and comprehension.
  4. Vocabulary development — learning new words, understanding word meanings in context, and building a rich vocabulary.
  5. Dyslexia support — structured, multi-sensory reading instruction for students with dyslexia. We use Orton-Gillingham-inspired approaches and systematic phonics.
  6. Comprehension for academic subjects — reading textbooks, understanding instructions, and extracting information from non-fiction texts.
  7. Reading for pleasure — helping reluctant readers find books they enjoy and develop a love of reading.

How It Works

Free assessment (optional): We start with a 45-60 minute assessment where the tutor meets your child, evaluates their reading level, and identifies the specific skills that need attention. This is not a test. It is a conversation starter. For young children, we use informal assessment through games and activities.

Weekly sessions: Most students have one or two sessions per week. Reading is a skill that builds with consistent practice.

In your villa or online: We come to your villa in Canggu, Ubud, Sanur, Seminyak, or surrounding areas. We also offer online tutoring via Zoom with shared screens and digital books.

Tutor matching: We match your child with a tutor who has reading specialist training and experience with the age group and needs of your child. Dyslexia tutors are different from general reading tutors. We know the difference.

Progress tracking: After every session, the tutor sends a brief update: what was covered, what the student did well, what needs more work, and what the next session will focus on. Every four weeks, you receive a formal progress report with reading level assessments.

Reading Approaches We Use

  • Systematic phonics: We teach phonics in a structured, sequential way: letter sounds, blending, digraphs, trigraphs, and complex spellings. We use multi-sensory techniques: seeing, hearing, saying, and writing.
  • Orton-Gillingham approach: For students with dyslexia, we use Orton-Gillingham-inspired methods: structured, explicit, multi-sensory, and cumulative. We teach one concept at a time and review constantly.
  • Guided reading: We read books together, teaching strategies as we go: sounding out words, breaking words into syllables, using context clues, and re-reading for understanding.
  • Comprehension strategies: We teach students to predict, question, visualise, connect, infer, and summarise. We use graphic organisers and discussion to build understanding.
  • Fluency practice: We read aloud together, model fluent reading, and use repeated reading to build speed and accuracy. We record progress and celebrate improvement.
  • Vocabulary instruction: We teach words in context, explore word families and roots, and build vocabulary through reading and discussion.
  • Balinese and Indonesian context: For children in Bali, we can incorporate Indonesian language and Balinese culture into reading sessions. We use local stories, cultural references, and bilingual approaches where appropriate.

What Makes Our Reading Tutoring Different

  • Specialist training: Our reading tutors are trained in phonics, reading comprehension, and dyslexia support. They are not just English tutors who happen to teach reading.
  • Multi-sensory approach: We engage sight, sound, touch, and movement to make reading stick. This is especially important for children with dyslexia or learning differences.
  • Patience and encouragement: Learning to read is hard. Many children feel embarrassed or frustrated. Our tutors are patient, warm, and skilled at building confidence. We celebrate small wins.
  • Real books, not worksheets: We use real books, stories, and texts that interest the child. We do not rely on boring worksheets. Reading should be enjoyable.
  • Parent involvement: We teach parents how to support reading at home: how to read with their child, what questions to ask, and how to make reading a daily habit. The tutor is a guide; the parent is the daily support.
  • Bali context: We understand the unique context of Bali: children who speak multiple languages, children who move between schools and countries, children who need to catch up after transitions. We tailor our approach to each child's situation.

FAQ

My child is in Year 3 and still struggles with reading. Is it too late?

No. It is never too late to learn to read. We work with children of all ages, including older children who need to catch up. The key is the right approach and consistent practice.

Can you help with dyslexia?

Yes. We have tutors trained in dyslexia support who use structured, multi-sensory approaches. We do not diagnose dyslexia, but we can provide tutoring that helps children with dyslexia learn to read effectively. If you suspect dyslexia, we recommend a professional assessment.

How long will it take to see improvement?

Most parents see improvement within 4-8 weeks of consistent tutoring. Reading is a skill that builds gradually. The more a child practises, the faster they improve. We set realistic goals and track progress so you can see the improvement.

Can you help with reading comprehension, not just decoding?

Yes. Many children can read words but do not understand what they read. We teach comprehension strategies: predicting, questioning, visualising, summarising, and inferring. We build comprehension through discussion and practice.

Can you tutor online?

Yes. We offer online reading tutoring via Zoom with shared screens and digital books. This works well for older children and for families who live outside our in-person areas. For very young children, in-person tutoring is usually more effective.
