What IGCSE Students Need Help With

Cambridge IGCSE is the world's most popular international qualification for 14 to 16-year-olds. It is rigorous, respected, and challenging. For many families in Bali, IGCSE is the first time their child faces formal, high-stakes exams. The jump from primary or MYP to IGCSE is significant. The content is deeper, the exams are longer, and the marking is precise.

The most common challenges we see are:

  • Core vs Extended decision: Many students and parents are unsure whether to enter Core or Extended papers. Core is easier but capped at a grade C. Extended is harder but allows grades up to A*. The wrong choice can limit a student's future options. We help families make this decision based on the child's ability, ambition, and university goals.
  • Exam technique: IGCSE exams are not just about knowing the content. They are about showing your working, using the correct terminology, managing time, and avoiding common traps. Many students lose marks not because they do not know the answer but because they do not present it correctly.
  • Past paper practice: IGCSE exams follow predictable patterns. The same question types appear year after year. Students who practise past papers regularly perform significantly better than those who do not. We use past papers from the last five years to familiarise students with question types and marking schemes.
  • Subject-specific difficulties: Maths Extended is the most requested subject. Students struggle with algebra, trigonometry, and statistics. English Language requires strong reading comprehension and writing skills. Sciences require both conceptual understanding and practical knowledge.
  • Time management: IGCSE students typically take 6-8 subjects. Balancing coursework, revision, and exam preparation is difficult. Many students are overwhelmed.
  • Transition from other curricula: Students who have moved from the Indonesian national curriculum, Australian Curriculum, or US Common Core often find IGCSE challenging because the language, notation, and expectations are different.

Core vs Extended Papers

Core Papers: Designed for students who are expected to achieve grades C to G. The content is less demanding. The exams are shorter. Core is suitable for students who find the subject challenging and do not need a high grade for their future plans.

Extended Papers: Designed for students who are expected to achieve grades A* to E. The content is more demanding. The exams are longer and include more complex questions. Extended is suitable for students who are aiming for university, especially in the UK, US, or Australia.

How we help you decide: We assess the child's current level, their performance in school, their ambition, and their university goals. We then recommend Core or Extended. If a student is borderline, we may recommend starting with Extended and moving to Core if needed. We can also support a mix: Extended in strong subjects, Core in weaker subjects.

Common subjects with Core/Extended options: Maths (0580/0581), Biology (0610), Chemistry (0620), Physics (0625), Coordinated Sciences (0654), and Combined Science (0653).

Exam Technique and Past Paper Practice

IGCSE success is 50% knowledge and 50% technique. We teach:

Time management: How to allocate time across questions. How to avoid spending too long on one question. How to leave time for checking.

Question analysis: How to read the command words (state, describe, explain, compare, evaluate, discuss). How to identify what the examiner is looking for. How to plan your answer before writing.

Showing working: In maths and science, marks are awarded for working, not just the final answer. We teach students to show every step clearly.

Using the mark scheme: We teach students to think like an examiner. What is the mark scheme looking for? How many marks is each part worth? What are common mistakes that lose marks?

Past paper practice: We use past papers from the last five years. We start with untimed practice to build confidence, then move to timed practice to build exam stamina. We review every answer against the mark scheme.

Common question types: We identify the question types that appear every year and teach students how to answer them. For example, in IGCSE Maths Extended, the last question is always a challenging problem-solving question. We teach strategies for tackling these.

How We Assess the Student

Every IGCSE tutoring journey starts with an assessment:

What we assess:

  • Current knowledge and understanding of the syllabus
  • Exam technique and past paper performance
  • Specific gaps and misconceptions
  • Study habits and revision strategies
  • Confidence and attitude towards the subject

How we assess:

  • Informal questioning and conversation (15-20 minutes)
  • A short past paper section or topic test (20-30 minutes)
  • Discussion with the parent about school performance, teacher feedback, and exam goals

What happens after the assessment:

  • We write a brief assessment report identifying strengths, gaps, and priorities
  • We propose a tutoring plan with specific goals and a timeline
  • We agree on Core or Extended (if applicable)
  • We set a review date (usually four weeks later) to assess progress

Lesson Structure

A typical IGCSE tutoring session follows this structure:

Warm-up (5-10 minutes): A short review of the previous session's topic or a quick mental maths exercise.

Main topic (30-45 minutes): The tutor explains a topic, models worked examples, and guides the student through practice questions. The tutor adapts the pace to the student's needs.

Past paper practice (10-15 minutes): A timed question or section from a past paper. The tutor reviews the answer against the mark scheme and provides feedback.

Review and homework (5-10 minutes): The tutor summarises the session, highlights key takeaways, and sets homework. Homework is usually a past paper section or topic revision.

Progress Plan and Tracking

We use a structured progress plan for every IGCSE student:

Short-term goals (2-4 weeks): Specific topics or skills to master. For example: "Complete all algebra questions on past papers 2019-2023" or "Improve essay structure in English Language."

Medium-term goals (1-3 months): Broader objectives. For example: "Complete syllabus coverage for Maths Extended" or "Improve mock exam result by one grade."

Long-term goals (3-6 months): Exam outcomes. For example: "Achieve a grade A in IGCSE Maths Extended" or "Achieve a grade B in IGCSE English Language."

We track progress using:

  • Weekly tutor notes
  • Monthly progress reports
  • Mock exam results
  • Past paper scores
  • Parent feedback and school report review

Parent Reporting

After every session, the tutor sends a brief WhatsApp message. Every four weeks, we send a formal progress report with a summary of topics covered, assessment of progress, and recommendations.

FAQ

How do you help my child choose between Core and Extended?

We assess the child's current level, their performance in school, and their future goals. If they are aiming for university, we usually recommend Extended. If they are struggling with the subject, we may recommend Core. We can also support a mix of Core and Extended across different subjects.

Can you help with all IGCSE subjects?

Yes. We cover all Cambridge IGCSE subjects. If you need a subject not listed, message us — we may have a specialist tutor.

How do you prepare students for IGCSE exams?

We teach syllabus content, exam technique, and past paper practice. We use past papers from the last five years to familiarise students with question types and marking schemes. We also teach time management, question analysis, and working presentation.

What is the difference between IGCSE and GCSE?

IGCSE is the international version of GCSE. It is designed for students outside the UK. The content is similar, but IGCSE has more flexibility in assessment methods and is more widely available internationally. In Bali, most international schools offer IGCSE rather than GCSE.

Can you support students who have moved from other curricula?

Yes. We have experience supporting students who have moved from the Indonesian national curriculum, Australian Curriculum, US Common Core, and other systems. We identify curriculum gaps and bridge them.

How long before the exam should we start tutoring?

We recommend starting at least 3 months before the exam for subject-specific tutoring. For intensive exam preparation, 6-8 weeks is the minimum. The earlier you start, the more time we have to build knowledge and technique.

Do you offer intensive revision courses?

Yes. We offer intensive revision courses in the weeks before exams. These can be daily or twice-daily sessions focused on past paper practice, exam technique, and last-minute gap-filling.

What materials do you use?

Our tutors use Cambridge-endorsed textbooks, past papers, mark schemes, and examiner reports. We also use online resources such as Cambridge's learner guides and subject-specific websites.
