What Exam Preparation Involves

Exams are not just tests of knowledge. They are tests of technique, stamina, and mindset. A student who knows the content but cannot manage their time, present their working, or handle exam stress will underperform. Conversely, a student who has mastered exam technique can often score higher than a student with more knowledge but less technique.

Our exam preparation tutoring covers three areas:

Knowledge consolidation: We review the syllabus, identify gaps, and ensure the student has a solid understanding of every topic. We do not try to cover everything in one session. We prioritise based on the exam format, the student's strengths, and the mark allocation.

Exam technique: We teach the specific skills needed for each exam: time management, question analysis, answer structure, working presentation, and mark scheme awareness. This is where most students gain the most marks.

Mindset and stress management: We teach students to manage exam anxiety, build confidence, and approach the exam with a positive, focused mindset. We use relaxation techniques, visualisation, and positive self-talk.

Exams We Prepare Students For

Cambridge IGCSE: We prepare students for all IGCSE subjects. We use past papers from the last five years, examiner reports, and mark schemes. We focus on the specific requirements of each paper: multiple choice, structured questions, extended response, and practical assessment.

IB Diploma: We prepare students for all IB subjects. We focus on exam technique for Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3 (where applicable). We also prepare students for the Internal Assessment, Theory of Knowledge essay, and Extended Essay.

A-Level: We prepare students for all A-Level subjects. We focus on exam technique, essay writing, data analysis, and problem-solving. We use past papers from the last five years and mark schemes.

School Entrance Assessments: We prepare children for entrance assessments to Bali's international schools: Green School, Canggu Community School, Bali Island School, Dyatmika School, Sanur Independent School, and others. We cover English, maths, and reasoning tests.

SAT and ACT: For students applying to US universities, we provide SAT and ACT preparation. We cover maths, reading, writing, and essay sections.

Other exams: We can prepare students for any exam. Message us with the exam name and we will design a preparation plan.

The Exam Preparation Process

Step 1: Diagnostic assessment (Week 1)

We assess the student's current knowledge, exam technique, and confidence. We identify: syllabus gaps, weak topics, strong topics, exam technique weaknesses, and mindset issues. We then write a preparation plan with specific goals and a timeline.

Step 2: Knowledge consolidation (Weeks 2-6)

We review the syllabus topic by topic. We focus on the student's weak areas while maintaining their strong areas. We use a mix of explanation, worked examples, practice questions, and past paper sections. We adapt the pace to the student's needs.

Step 3: Exam technique training (Weeks 4-8)

We teach the specific skills needed for the exam: time management, question analysis, answer structure, working presentation, and mark scheme awareness. We use timed practice papers and review every answer against the mark scheme.

Step 4: Mock exams and review (Weeks 7-10)

We conduct full mock exams under timed, exam conditions. We then review every answer in detail, identifying what was done well, what was done poorly, and what needs more work. We use this to adjust the preparation plan for the final weeks.

Step 5: Final revision and mindset (Weeks 10-12)

We focus on final revision of weak areas, exam strategy, and mindset. We teach the student how to approach the exam day: what to eat, how to sleep, what to bring, how to manage nerves, and how to stay focused.

Exam Technique Specifics

Time management: We teach students to allocate time based on marks. A 100-mark exam with 2 hours means 1.2 minutes per mark. We teach students to answer the easy questions first, leave the hard questions for later, and always leave time for checking.

Question analysis: We teach students to read the command words carefully: state, describe, explain, compare, evaluate, discuss, calculate, show. Each command word requires a different type of answer. We teach students to plan their answer before writing.

Answer structure: We teach students to structure their answers clearly: introduction, main points, evidence, conclusion. For maths and science, we teach students to show their working step by step. For essays, we teach PEEL and TEEL structures.

Working presentation: In maths and science, marks are awarded for working, not just the final answer. We teach students to present their working clearly: label diagrams, define variables, show calculations, and state units.

Mark scheme awareness: We teach students to think like an examiner. What is the mark scheme looking for? How many marks is each part worth? What are common mistakes that lose marks? We use past papers and mark schemes to build this awareness.

Stress Management and Mindset

Exam anxiety is common and normal. We teach students to manage it through:

Relaxation techniques: Deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualisation. We teach students to use these techniques before and during the exam.

Positive self-talk: We teach students to replace negative thoughts ("I'm going to fail") with positive ones ("I've prepared well and I can do this"). We use affirmations and mental rehearsal.

Sleep and nutrition: We teach students the importance of sleep, nutrition, and exercise in the weeks before the exam. We provide practical advice on how to sleep well, eat well, and stay active.

Exam day strategy: We teach students what to do on the day of the exam: what to eat for breakfast, what to bring, how to arrive early, how to stay calm, and how to approach the exam paper.

Intensive Courses

We offer intensive exam preparation courses in the weeks before exams. These can be:

Daily sessions: 2-3 hours per day, 5 days per week. This is the most intensive option and is suitable for students who need significant catch-up or who are preparing for multiple exams.

Twice-weekly sessions: 2 hours per session, 2-3 times per week. This is the standard option and is suitable for most students.

Weekend intensives: 4-6 hours per day on Saturday and Sunday. This is suitable for students who are busy during the week with school.

Holiday courses: Daily or twice-daily sessions during the school holidays. This is popular for students who want to use the holiday to catch up or prepare for upcoming exams.
