Who This Service Is For
We provide specialist tutoring for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Bali. We do not diagnose or treat autism. We provide educational support that helps children with autism learn, communicate, and build confidence. The children we work with usually have:
- Difficulty with social interaction: Trouble understanding social cues, making friends, and navigating social situations.
- Communication challenges: Difficulty expressing needs, understanding instructions, or engaging in conversation. This includes both verbal and non-verbal communication.
- Sensory sensitivities: Over-sensitivity or under-sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, smells, or movement. These sensitivities can affect learning and behaviour.
- Need for routine and predictability: Difficulty with change, transitions, and unexpected events. Children with autism often feel safest when routines are consistent.
- Special interests: Intense, focused interests in specific topics. These can be a powerful tool for learning when used well.
- Repetitive behaviours: Stimming, repetitive movements, or rigid routines that help the child self-regulate.
- Strengths in detail, memory, and logic: Many children with autism have exceptional memory, attention to detail, and logical thinking. We build on these strengths.
Important: We are tutors, not doctors or therapists. We do not diagnose autism. If you suspect your child has autism, we recommend a formal assessment by a paediatrician, psychologist, or other qualified professional. We can recommend professionals in Bali. Once a diagnosis is made, we work with you and any other professionals to provide consistent, individualised educational support.
Common Autism Tutoring Needs in Bali
- Social skills and communication: Teaching social interaction through social stories, role-play, visual supports, and structured conversation practice. We teach the "hidden rules" of social interaction that neurotypical children learn naturally.
- Academic support in a structured way: Teaching maths, English, science, and other subjects using structured, explicit, and visual methods. We break tasks into small steps, use visual schedules, and provide clear instructions.
- Sensory-friendly learning environment: Creating a calm, predictable, low-stimulus tutoring environment. We adjust lighting, sound, seating, and materials to suit each child's sensory needs. We use sensory breaks and regulation strategies.
- Transition and change support: Helping children cope with transitions between activities, places, and routines. We use visual timers, countdowns, and advance warnings to make transitions manageable.
- Special interest integration: Using the child's special interests as a motivator and teaching tool. A child obsessed with dinosaurs can learn reading, writing, maths, and science through dinosaurs. We do not suppress special interests — we harness them.
- Executive function skills: Teaching planning, organisation, time management, and task completion. Children with autism often struggle with executive function and need explicit instruction in these skills.
- Emotional regulation: Teaching children to recognise, understand, and manage their emotions. We use emotion charts, calming strategies, and problem-solving techniques.
- Confidence and self-esteem: Children with autism often experience bullying, exclusion, and low self-esteem. We build confidence by celebrating strengths, accommodating needs, and creating a safe, accepting environment.
How It Works
Free parent consultation: We start with a free consultation (in person, by phone, or by video call) to discuss your child's autism diagnosis, needs, strengths, and goals. We gather information about their sensory profile, communication style, special interests, and triggers. We listen to your concerns and answer your questions.
Student assessment (optional): We offer a structured assessment to understand your child's learning profile, academic level, and specific needs. This is not a diagnostic test. It is an educational evaluation. See our Student Assessment page for details.
Individualised tutoring plan: We design a tutoring plan that is specific to your child's autism profile. We consider sensory needs, communication preferences, special interests, and triggers. We do not use generic worksheets. We create a plan that works for your unique child.
Specialist tutor matching: We match your child with a tutor who has autism training and experience. Our autism tutors understand sensory needs, social communication, and the importance of routine. They are patient, flexible, and respectful.
Structured, predictable sessions: Our autism tutoring follows a consistent structure every session. We use visual schedules, timers, and clear routines. We warn about transitions in advance. We minimise surprises. The session structure is predictable so the child can focus on learning, not on managing anxiety.
Sensory-friendly environment: We tutor in a setting that suits your child's sensory needs. For some children, this means a quiet room with soft lighting. For others, it means a familiar space with fidget tools available. We adapt to each child.
Special interest integration: We incorporate your child's special interests into tutoring sessions. We use interests as motivators, teaching tools, and rewards. A child who loves trains can learn maths through train timetables, reading through train books, and writing through train stories.
Regular communication: We communicate with you after every session and provide formal progress reports every four weeks. We can also communicate with your child's therapist, school, or other professionals if you request it.
Our Autism Approach
Visual supports: We use visual schedules, visual timers, picture cards, and written instructions to support communication and understanding. Visual supports reduce anxiety and increase independence.
Social stories: We create and use social stories to teach social situations, expectations, and appropriate responses. Social stories are short, personalised narratives that explain what will happen, what the child should do, and why.
Structured teaching (TEACCH principles): We use structured teaching principles: clear physical structure, visual schedules, individualised work systems, and visual instruction. This creates a predictable environment where the child can succeed.
Positive behaviour support: We use positive reinforcement, clear expectations, and consistent consequences. We do not use punishment or shame. We teach replacement behaviours and self-regulation strategies.
Communication support: We adapt our communication to the child's level. For non-verbal or minimally verbal children, we use gestures, pictures, written words, and augmentative communication tools. We respect all forms of communication.
Sensory integration: We build sensory breaks, movement, and regulation strategies into every session. We recognise that a child who is sensory dysregulated cannot learn. We help them get regulated first, then teach.
Strengths-based: We identify and build on each child's strengths. Many children with autism have exceptional memory, attention to detail, logical thinking, and special knowledge. We use these strengths to build confidence and to teach through interest.
Family partnership: We work closely with parents. We teach parents strategies they can use at home. We respect parents as the experts on their child. We do not tell parents what to do — we support them in what they are already doing.
FAQ
Do you diagnose autism?
No. We are tutors, not medical professionals. We do not diagnose autism or any other condition. If you suspect your child has autism, we recommend a formal assessment by a paediatrician, developmental psychologist, or other qualified professional. We can recommend professionals in Bali. Once a diagnosis is made, we work with you to provide appropriate educational support.
Can you work with my child's therapist or school?
Yes, with your permission. We can communicate with your child's ABA therapist, speech therapist, occupational therapist, school, or other professionals. We can share our tutoring plan, progress reports, and strategies. We believe in a coordinated, team approach.
Do you use ABA?
We are not ABA therapists. We are tutors who use educational strategies that are compatible with autism. We use structured teaching, visual supports, positive behaviour support, and interest-based learning. We do not use punitive or coercive techniques. We respect the child's autonomy and dignity.
Can you tutor non-verbal children?
Yes. We can tutor children who are non-verbal or minimally verbal. We use visual supports, gestures, written communication, and augmentative tools. We respect all forms of communication and do not insist on verbal responses.
How do you handle meltdowns?
We are trained in de-escalation and sensory regulation. If a child becomes overwhelmed, we reduce demands, provide calming strategies, and give the child space and time to regulate. We do not restrain children or force them to continue. We build trust so that meltdowns become less frequent over time.
Can you tutor online?
Yes. We offer online autism tutoring for families who live outside our in-person areas. However, online tutoring may be less effective for children with severe sensory needs or those who struggle with screen-based interaction. We assess each child individually to determine if online tutoring is appropriate.
