How to compare international schools in Bali in 2026: curricula, fees questions, learning support and fit, without rankings or invented partnerships.

Bali’s international schools differ on curriculum, size, setting and how much structure they place around the child. Marketing language tends to blur those differences; visits and written fee schedules clarify them.
This guide is a comparison method, not a league table. Verify fees, places and programmes with each school directly.
Use this page alongside visits, not instead of them. A comparison can tell you what to ask; only a morning inside a school, and your child’s face at pick-up, tells you how the answers feel.
The school-specific guides below compare each educational setting with Private Tutoring Bali. They cover nature-led education, IB continuity, Australian curriculum transfers, inclusive provision, Montessori practice and more. Selection is a qualitative shortlist, not a verified ranking of the ten best or most popular schools. Confirm current year groups, fees and availability with each school.
Every guide distinguishes full school enrolment from private tuition and links to official school information. Inclusion does not establish a partnership, referral agreement or endorsement.
These are the six factors we recommend weighing, in roughly this order. Everything else, facilities, marketing, uniforms, is decoration by comparison.
| Factor | Why it matters | What to ask the school |
|---|---|---|
| Curriculum and qualifications | Determines what your child studies and how portable the schooling is if you move again | Which curriculum and qualifications do you offer at my child’s stage? |
| Class size and staffing | Affects how much individual attention and how much learning support is realistically available | What are actual class sizes in this year group, and how is learning support organised? |
| Fees and total cost | Headline fees exclude registration, levies, transport, lunches and trips | May we have the full current fee schedule in writing, including one-off charges? |
| Admissions and timing | Popular year groups fill early, and calendars differ between northern- and southern-hemisphere schools | What are your entry points, waiting lists and term dates? |
| Location and transport | Bali traffic makes journey time more decisive than distance | What are the shuttle routes, and how long is the typical journey from our area? |
| School culture and philosophy | Structure versus freedom is a genuine trade-off that suits different children | What does a normal week look like, and how do you handle a child who is struggling? |
Most Bali international schools teach one of four frameworks. British-pattern schools follow Cambridge stages into IGCSE at around 16, then A-Level or another post-16 route. IB schools run the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes as one continuous framework from age 3 to 19. Australian-curriculum schools suit families returning to Australia. US-pattern and accredited online programmes offer credit-based flexibility with continuous assessment.
Transfers between frameworks are common and manageable at natural break points. Families often find the shift from IGCSE into the IB Diploma smooth, while any switch mid-way through the final two exam years is difficult because coursework components accumulate.
A practical tip: ask each school not only which curriculum it teaches but which qualification your child would actually leave with at 16 and at 18. Schools sometimes blend frameworks across age groups, and the exit qualification is what universities and next schools will read.
School fees in Bali span a wide range, and the gap between the advertised figure and the real annual cost is often large. Registration and enrolment charges, capital or building levies, transport, lunches, uniforms, examination entries and trips can each add materially.
The only reliable method is to request each school’s complete fee schedule for your child’s year group, in writing, for the correct academic year, and to check the date on any third-party figure you encounter. We will not publish figures we cannot keep current.
When comparing schedules, normalise them first: convert everything to one currency, one academic year and one child, including every recurring charge. Only then do two schools’ costs become comparable.
Ask for actual class sizes in your child’s year group rather than a policy maximum, and ask how teaching assistants and learning-support staff are deployed. Two schools with identical class sizes can feel very different depending on the second adult in the room.
Teaching style is the factor parents weight least and children feel most. Structured, exam-oriented classrooms and inquiry-led, project-based ones both produce successful students; they produce them from different children.
Teacher tenure is worth a direct question. A school where staff stay for years offers a different experience from one with heavy annual turnover, and admissions offices that answer the question frankly tend to run frank schools.
Structured British-pattern schools suit children who like clear expectations and families wanting certificates that travel well. IB schools suit broadly able, curious students and families who move countries often. Alternative settings suit younger children and those who have found conventional classrooms a poor fit. Australian-curriculum schools suit families whose compass points back to Australia.
The decisive evidence is your child’s account of a trial day. Trust it alongside your own impressions.
A caution against over-reading types: individual schools within each category differ more than the categories do. Use the type to build a shortlist, then judge the specific school on its own evidence.
A school transition can reveal a specific gap, but additional lessons should follow evidence rather than an assumption that every child needs them. Use current work and teacher feedback to identify a goal, then review whether the learner can apply the skill independently.
For children, Standard tuition is IDR 500,000 per hour and Master specialist tuition is IDR 1,000,000 per hour. Advanced is a separate company-training service. Confirm the tutor, schedule and any travel cost for your exact address in the written quote.
Tell us the school, year group and course so we can discuss an appropriate teaching brief. This does not imply a school partnership or guarantee a particular tutor’s availability. Private tuition does not confer school admission or replace the wider responsibilities of a school programme.
Bali has established IB, Cambridge, Australian-curriculum and alternative schools, concentrated around Canggu, Sanur, Ubud and Denpasar, and several are accredited by their awarding bodies. "Good" depends on your child: use the six factors above to build a shortlist, then judge each school on a visit and a trial day.
Fees vary widely by school and year group, and the advertised tuition rarely includes registration, capital levies, transport, lunches, exam entries and trips. We do not publish figures because they change yearly; request each school’s complete fee schedule for your child’s year group in writing and compare like with like.
There is no single best school, and we publish no rankings. Structured British-pattern schools, IB schools, Australian-curriculum schools and alternative settings each suit different children. The section above on which families each type tends to suit is the honest starting point; your child’s trial day is the deciding evidence.
Many children settle into a new school without extra tuition. If work in maths, English or another subject reveals a curriculum gap, discuss it with the teacher and consider focused support. A clear goal and a planned review help you decide whether additional lessons are useful for your child.
Tutoring follows the curriculum you choose; it does not replace a school decision. For curriculum continuity while you decide, see international curriculum tutoring.
Our IB tutors and Cambridge IGCSE pages explain what each programme demands of a student once you have shortlisted schools.
