International school transitions
A year-group name is only a label. Check the child's age at the school cut-off, the point reached in the old calendar, the new programme stage and actual recent work.

Year 6, Grade 5 and the final year of primary may describe similar ages in some systems, but they do not guarantee the same calendar point, taught content or transition expectations. A child can appear to move backwards or forwards on paper while remaining with their age peers.
Ask the receiving school which date determines age placement and whether its academic year begins in August, September, January or another month. Then compare where the child is within each calendar. A move in January from one system may arrive at the start of a school year or halfway through it.

| Anchor | Question to ask | Evidence to bring |
|---|---|---|
| Age and cut-off | Which birth-date cut-off does this school apply? | Birth date and written admissions policy |
| Calendar | What point of the school year will the child enter? | Old and new term dates |
| Programme stage | Which curriculum stage is taught in the proposed class? | Programme or syllabus documents |
| Current work | What can the child do independently now? | Recent ordinary work, reports and assessments |
The International Baccalaureate describes the PYP for ages 3 to 12, the MYP for 11 to 16 and the DP for 16 to 19. Cambridge presents a pathway from Early Years through Primary, Lower Secondary, Upper Secondary and Advanced with overlapping starting ages. Those ranges help families identify the broad stage, but an authorised school still applies its own admissions and placement process.
Do not use a programme age range to overrule a school or to infer that two students of the same age have covered identical content. Ask for the actual year overview, current units and upcoming assessments in the proposed class.

Choose recent classroom work rather than a portfolio of only the strongest pieces. Include a mathematics page, a writing sample, a recent report and any support plan that the receiving school needs to understand. Date each item and note whether it was independent, scaffolded or completed after feedback.
A child can be appropriately placed with age peers and still have a few curriculum gaps. Conversely, moving a child to a lower year does not automatically solve a mismatch in topic sequence. Ask the school to state the placement decision and the academic bridge as two separate parts of the plan.
A short gap map can compare the new class expectations with recent work and identify a bounded list for tutoring or school support. It should not become an unofficial admissions test, and tutoring should not coach a child to hide where support is needed.
Not safely from the label alone. Compare the receiving school's age cut-off, calendar, programme stage and current class expectations, then ask the school to confirm placement in writing.
Not necessarily. Topic sequence and year placement are different decisions. Ask the school whether the gap can be bridged while the child remains with the proposed age group.
