Some children stall on any task with more than two steps, and it is rarely laziness. This guide explains what is usually going on and how to break big tasks into startable pieces.
When a child freezes on a multi-step task, the bottleneck is usually starting and sequencing, not willingness or intelligence. The fix at home is external structure: break the task into visible steps, make the first step tiny, and keep the plan outside the child’s head where they can see it.
This guide is for parents of children who stall on projects, multi-part homework or long instructions, at any Bali school. It explains the skill involved, gives a breakdown method with worked examples, and ends with an honest note on when difficulty warrants a professional look.
A multi-step task asks a child to hold the whole thing in mind while doing only the current piece: plan the sequence, remember the goal, start, persist, switch steps and check at the end. Each of those is a separate skill, and a weakness in any one of them stalls the chain.
The stalling often looks like avoidance: sharpening pencils, staring out of the window, melting down over a "simple" homework sheet. Parents understandably read this as defiance. In practice the child is frequently overwhelmed by a task that has no visible shape, and the behaviour is the overflow.
Age matters here. A seven-year-old who cannot sequence a three-part instruction is within the normal range; a fourteen-year-old who cannot plan a two-week project may still be within the normal range, but the costs are rising. The strategies below help at any age; the question of screening, covered at the end, becomes more pressing as the gap widens.
Difficulties of this kind are common in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a common neurodevelopmental difference that affects attention, activity and self-control, and they also appear in many children without any diagnosis. Either way, the classroom response is the same: make the steps visible.
Executive function is the set of mental skills used to plan, start, organise and finish tasks: holding information in mind while using it, resisting impulses, switching between steps, and keeping track of time. Think of it as the project manager of the brain.
Executive function develops slowly, well into the teens and beyond, and children differ enormously in how fast it matures. A child can be verbally brilliant and still unable to unpack a three-part instruction, because those are different systems.
The hopeful part: executive function skills respond to practice and, even more, to good scaffolding. You do not fix the project manager by lecturing it; you give it a whiteboard.
It also helps to know what scaffolding is not. Doing the planning for your child forever, reminding them of every step, and rescuing every deadline teaches the project manager to stay on holiday. The direction of travel is always towards the child holding more of the plan, which is why the visible steps below are built to be handed over.
The method has five moves, and it works on almost any school task:
A hypothetical example: a Year 5 science project, "research an animal and present it", becomes seven cards: choose the animal, find two facts about habitat, find two about diet, draw it, write five sentences, lay out the poster, read it aloud to someone. Each card is startable; the original task was not.
A second hypothetical example: a reading log that never gets filled in becomes a sticky note on the current book: date, pages read, one sentence. The log improved not because the child changed but because the step shrank.
Whatever the task, get the plan out of your child’s head and onto paper, a whiteboard or cards. Working memory, the mental scratchpad used to hold steps in mind, is exactly the resource these children are short of; paper is a free upgrade.
Keep visuals simple and current: today’s steps, not a wall of laminates. Photograph a good layout before tidying it away, so the next task starts from a template rather than from scratch.
Time deserves its own visual. Many children who stall have no felt sense of twenty minutes, so an analogue timer or a simple "started at, due at" note beside the task makes the invisible visible. Pair the timer with the step list and most "how long will this take?" anxiety dissolves.

Structure at home is always worth trying first, for any child. But some patterns deserve a professional look: difficulty so persistent and pervasive that it shows up in every setting, a large gap between your child’s obvious understanding and their output, or school raising the same concern independently.
The first step is usually the class teacher or the school’s learning support coordinator, who can screen and put support in place. Teachers and tutors can screen for possible difficulties, but a formal diagnosis, for ADHD or anything else, is made by qualified specialists such as psychologists or paediatricians, and only after a proper assessment. Share the home strategies with the school once they work. Teachers value knowing that a child responds to numbered steps and visible timers, and a classroom that borrows a working home method gives your child the same scaffolding twice a day instead of once.
