IGCSE Maths method
Write enough connected steps for another reader to reconstruct the method. Keep calculator checks separate from the mathematical argument.

A calculator can confirm a numerical result, but it does not show why the operation was chosen. Cambridge mark schemes can award method marks, accuracy marks and independent marks according to the requirements of a particular question. A readable solution gives the examiner evidence to apply that scheme.
This guide cannot predict marks for an unseen response. The published mark scheme for the exact paper is the authority. The practical goal is simpler: make each mathematical decision visible without filling the page with unrelated notes.

For the equation 3x + 7 = 31, a compact solution is: 3x = 24, then x = 8. The first line shows that 7 was removed from both sides. The second shows division by 3. Writing only x = 8 hides the route, even if the value is right.
Align equivalent expressions so the reader can see what changed. Do not insert several equals signs between expressions that are not equal. If a step changes direction or uses a new formula, write the formula or operation before substituting numbers.
| Part | What to record | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Plan | Formula, equation or relationship | Shows the chosen method |
| Substitute | Values with brackets and units where needed | Makes input errors visible |
| Process | Connected algebra or arithmetic steps | Allows the method to be followed |
| Present | Final value with requested accuracy and units | Answers the actual question |

If an intermediate value is 2.7346, storing the full calculator value and rounding only the final answer reduces accumulated rounding error. A student can write a few additional digits on the working line or use the calculator answer memory, then apply the accuracy requested in the question.
For an exact answer such as a fraction or a multiple of pi, a decimal may not be an equivalent final form for the task. Read the question and the paper instructions. The IGCSE rounding guide treats that decision in detail.
Substitute a solved value back into the original equation. For x = 8, calculate 3 times 8 plus 7 and confirm that it equals 31. Keep this check beside the solution or on a clear final line. A check supports the method; it does not replace it.
Use estimation to catch implausible scale. If a length is meant to be a little over 3 cm, an answer of 305 cm should trigger a review of units or decimal entry. Mark the line where the value first becomes unreasonable rather than starting the whole question again blindly.
The established Cambridge IGCSE tutoring page owns the commercial curriculum intent. This article answers a narrow method-presentation question and does not claim that one layout earns a fixed number of marks.
Families arranging in-person study near Jimbaran can check the Jimbaran tutoring page for location planning and current availability. Bring the syllabus code, paper type and an anonymised sample of ordinary working to an enquiry.
Show the relationship or formula, the substituted values and the key transformations needed to reach the answer. Very short questions may need less. Use the mark allocation and the exact paper’s mark scheme as guides.
A calculator result can check arithmetic, but it may not show the method the question assesses. Record the mathematical steps that connect the given information to the result.
